FOOTBALL fans across the region have helped the Beacon Centre score a major goal in its mission to support those with sight loss, thanks to a £15,000 donation from the historic JW Hunt Cup.

The remarkable amateur charity football competition, sponsored by the Gough Group Ltd, has been a staple of the West Midlands community since 1926, making it one of the oldest charity football events in the UK.

The current champions, Lichfield City FC, clinched the title after a thrilling victory over Wolverhampton Sporting in the 2024 cup final held at Molineux Stadium in May. Thanks to supporters from across the region, the JW Hunt Cup has now raised an impressive £420,000 since its inception, enabling Beacon to help people to live well with sight loss.

Lisa Cowley, Chief Executive of Beacon Centre, said: “This donation is fantastic news for us and demonstrates the incredible support from the local football community and the JW Hunt Cup. The funds will go a long way in helping us provide essential services and support to people with sight loss across the West Midlands.”

Alex Hamil MBE, President of the JW Hunt Cup, added: “We’re proud to support such an important cause. The cup has united fans and communities for nearly a century, and it’s heartwarming to see the positive impact we can make together.”

This generous donation will help the Beacon Centre run services including health and wellbeing activities, befriending, employment and digital support, information, advice and guidance to people around the region living with sight loss.
