Continue ReadingThink Halloween and you think pumpkins! Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you carve your pumpkin safely and easily, even if you have sight loss.
Use rubber bands, string, or tactile markers to create a pattern for your pumpkin face. You can use these as guides for where to carve.
Eyes and nose: Simple triangle shapes are easiest. Feel for placement and stick tactile stickers where the eyes and nose will go.
Mouth: Use a rubber band or string to create a smiling or straight mouth, adjusting it until you’re happy with the design.
Start with the eyes, then the nose, and finally the mouth. Use safe carving tools for you.
Carefully carve along the edges of the rubber bands or markers. Take your time to avoid slipping.
Once the carving is done, place an LED candle inside the pumpkin to light it up. This adds the final spooky touch!
Run your hands over the pumpkin to appreciate your work, then place it somewhere for everyone to enjoy.
Always use tools designed for pumpkin carving (dull or plastic tools work best).
Work slowly and feel your way through each step to avoid accidents.
Ask for help if needed, especially with the cutting part.
Final Tip:
If you’d rather not carve, try decorating with tactile materials like buttons, stickers, or yarn, or use paint to make your pumpkin come to life without carving.
Happy pumpkin carving!
