About Us

Since 1875 Beacon helps make sure that no-one faces sight loss alone, supporting each person no matter where they are on their journey. Supporting people living with sight conditions such as Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Tunnel Vision and Glaucoma since 1875.

At Beacon, we’ve been supporting people living with sight loss in innovative ways since 1875. From teaching braille in the 1800s, to helping people get the most from assistive technology today, we’ve always been passionate about supporting those living with sight loss to live the fullest and most independent lives possible.

Today, our Centre in Sedgley provides a wide range of support for those living with sight loss across the Black Country and Staffordshire.

From helping with low vision, wellbeing, digital skills and employment, to simply being there to provide advice, we’re there to make the day-to-day challenges easier so our members can focus on getting the most out of life.

These days, we support thousands of people with sight loss across our region, as we have done for many years. Here’s how it all began…

Support us

Take a moment to consider the impact sight loss does or could have on you. Sight loss doesn’t only impact your ability to see things, people and places, it can also take away your ability to be seen and considered by others. It can make you as invisible as the world becomes to you.

Together we can change that, we can make sight loss an invisible disability. With practical and emotional support, assistive technology and most importantly a change in attitude and confidence of those impacted by sight loss and the whole community, we can build the connections that will make the difference.

Our goal is to support everyone living with sight loss in the West Midlands to live their lives to the full, but we need your help to make this happen.

Providing our services costs over £1.2 million a year, and the challenges of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis means we need your support more than ever so we can help as many people with sight loss as possible.

Meanwhile, demand for the work we do has never been higher. In 2015, 167,000 people in the West Midlands were living with sight loss, and by 2050, it’s predicted that this could reach 350,000.
