7 Easy Steps For Pumpkin Carving With Sight Loss

Think Halloween and you think pumpkins! Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you carve your pumpkin safely and easily, even if you have sight loss.

What You’ll Need:

  • A pumpkin
  • Safe carving tools (blunt tools like a melon baller or plastic knives can be used for safer carving)
  • A spoon or scoop for removing the insides
  • Tactile markers like rubber bands, string, or bumpons which are raised stickers
  • A tray or bowl for pumpkin seeds and insides
  • A cloth or towel to keep things clean and dry
  • An LED candle (for the final step!)

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prepare Your Pumpkin
  • Feel for size and shape: Choose a pumpkin that is easy to hold and has a smooth surface.
  • Wipe it down: Use a cloth to clean any dirt you can feel off the pumpkin, so it’s ready for carving.
  1. Cut Off the Top
  • Find the stem: Use your fingers to locate the top of the pumpkin where the stem is.
  • Make a guide: Place rubber bands around the top part to help guide you in cutting the lid. You could also use a tactile marker like bumpons or string to map out the circle.
  • Cut carefully: With a a safe carving tool, slowly cut around the marked area. You might need someone to guide your hands if necessary.
  1. Scoop Out the Insides
  • Use a spoon or scoop: Once the top is removed, use a spoon or scoop to remove the pumpkin seeds and the stringy insides. Place them in a bowl or tray.
  • Feel for smoothness: Keep scooping until the inside of the pumpkin feels smooth.
  1. Design Your Pumpkin’s Face

Use rubber bands, string, or tactile markers to create a pattern for your pumpkin face. You can use these as guides for where to carve.

Eyes and nose: Simple triangle shapes are easiest. Feel for placement and stick tactile stickers where the eyes and nose will go.

Mouth: Use a rubber band or string to create a smiling or straight mouth, adjusting it until you’re happy with the design.

  1. Carve the Face

Start with the eyes, then the nose, and finally the mouth. Use safe carving tools for you.

Carefully carve along the edges of the rubber bands or markers. Take your time to avoid slipping.

  1. Light It Up

Once the carving is done, place an LED candle inside the pumpkin to light it up. This adds the final spooky touch!

  1. Enjoy Your Pumpkin!

Run your hands over the pumpkin to appreciate your work, then place it somewhere for everyone to enjoy.

Safety Tips:

Always use tools designed for pumpkin carving (dull or plastic tools work best).

Work slowly and feel your way through each step to avoid accidents.

Ask for help if needed, especially with the cutting part.

Final Tip:

If you’d rather not carve, try decorating with tactile materials like buttons, stickers, or yarn, or use paint to make your pumpkin come to life without carving.

Happy pumpkin carving!
