When Janet’s sight suddenly became blurry, everyday life changed almost overnight.
In January 2025, she found she could no longer read. Having not visited an optician for 10 years, Janet initially thought she might have cataracts because of her family history.
This is a black, yellow and pink quote. It reads from panic to relief You made us both comfortable and you really listened. It has the Beacon logo on it.
After being referred to Wolverhampton Eye Hospital, however, she was diagnosed with Wet Macular Degeneration and is now receiving regular injections in both eyes.
The impact went far beyond her vision.
Everyday things she had previously taken for granted became difficult, and Janet found herself increasingly anxious about what the future might hold. Even something as ordinary as visiting the garden centre became daunting.
Things began to change when Janet came to Beacon.
During her appointment, our team took time to listen to what she was experiencing and introduced her to low-vision aids and practical techniques that could help with everyday life.
Being able to see that there were ways to do some of the things she thought she had lost helped turn panic into possibility.
Janet said:
“It was very relaxing, and it made me realise how supportive and nice you are. You are very friendly and helped me relax, as I did not want to come in today and my anxiety was very unsettling. Kush, you have made us both comfortable and you really listened. Thank you so much.”
We are sharing Janet’s story during National Eye Health Week to encourage other people not to put off looking after their eyes.
After going 10 years without an eye test, she hopes her story will encourage others to make eye health a priority and reassure anyone experiencing sight loss that support is available.
Because supporting someone through sight loss isn’t only about what they can see. It’s about helping them regain confidence, independence and a sense of what’s possible.
