Community Engagement
As well as supporting people living with sight loss, we also help to raise awareness in our community and beyond.
Continue ReadingComing to terms with sight loss can have a huge impact on both the person who is visually impaired and their family and friends, affecting every area of their lives.
When someone you’re close to is experiencing sight loss, it can be difficult to know how best to support them, so that’s where Beacon comes in.
When things get a bit overwhelming and you need some advice, our friendly and experienced team are here to guide you so you’re never alone.
Depending on the severity of sight loss, you may be able to register as visually impaired. It is not compulsory, but it may help you to access certain benefits including disability living allowance and a reduction in the TV licence fee.
If you have life-changing sight loss but are still in work, you may be eligible for a grant from Access To Work. This is a programme run by the job centre to provide advice and support for those living with sight loss and other life-changing conditions.
If you have been diagnosed with a condition that affects your vision, you have a legal obligation to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency if you are a driver. Failure to do so is a crime and can result in a fine of up to £1,000, so it’s important to get it sorted as soon as possible.
In the long term, Beacon can provide advice on anything you need to help you live a more independent life – from supported living, to transport or employment skills and so much more. With years of experience, we can also provide advice for specific visual conditions , so if you need any guidance on support for your particular needs, reach out to us and we’ll do our best to help.
If you need advice on sight loss, don’t hesitate to get in touch. To find out more about how we could help you, drop into one of our centres or get in touch.
